HABITAT. LIBRARY BUILD, READ ON

mediumcontrol_library_001

How am I suppose to get all the way to the top of this? I do have superior leaping skills but this is a little out of hand, even for me. The Habitat was built with a small footprint so utilization of space was essential. The Humans weren’t going to let all their cubic volume go to waste, so they decided to build a library nook. Towering around 15 feet tall this thing can hold some serious literature. It also serves the purpose of adding loads of color variation to the otherwise mono-tone living space. To read more about how the Humans built their library, click HERE.

As with every project, the Humans attempted to reuse materials which adds continuity to the Habitat and saves a tree. For the library nook scrap birch plywood leftover from the ceiling was sanded, cut and clear coated to make the shelves. Minimal obtrusive shelving, yet strong, was the goal; therefore metal tracks were attached to the studs and simple plywood shelves screwed-on. Reading is for winners so read on my friends.

Brackets added and first shelf is placed. A grip of shelves await their duty to the right.

All shelves tested and added. A good time as any for some back stretches. Let the books commence.

A good amount of books added to test spacing. Here you can see me testing out the last paperback shelf.

Library stocked and the living room gains some order.

We have a lot of books, it is my job to utilize my librarian skills and make sure everything is accounted for. Look at my eyes, obviously meant for reading.

The room is beautiful! Are the floors heated? I know cats LOVE heated floors. And the pic of Watson in the shelves with tongue out is priceless! It looks cold up there…

  2. Thanks much. Not sure if we have many pictures of Watson with his tongue in his mouth… quite the character.

Yes, the floors have in-floor heat; which Watson does love indeed. Polishing and heating / cooling of the floors: http://watsonthecat.com/?p=805

    Cheers.

Love everything about your habitat… cool architecture, neat furniture, organized with great graphic design books, and an outstanding outdoor view…you are a lucky cat! Just wondering, though, if you can reach the books at the top when human needs to access them. It’s a pretty steep climb…but you look resourceful enough to find a way!

  4. Thanks Carolyn, appreciate it. Indeed, quite high up there… Ladder designs / ideas are currently in the works.

An Emperor’s-New-Clothes question: how do you easily and regularly reach the books on the high shelves? The cat looks above-average in intellect, but I have seen no shots of him pulling out books and bringing them to his ostensible master. Another photoset, perhaps?

P.S……I meant, ‘Emperor-has-no-clothes’ question. Hadn’t had my first coffee of the day.
